Georgia - Support SB 2 | Council For Citizens Against Government Waste

Georgia - Support SB 2

March 1, 2019

Georgia Senate
State Capitol
Atlanta, GA 30334

Dear Senators,

On behalf of the 39,732 members of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) in Georgia, I write to express our support for efforts to encourage further broadband deployment by removing unnecessary barriers, reducing the cost of investment, and providing predictability to this vital sector of the economy.  Legislators should strike the right balance between allowing new entrants into the market and protecting consumers.

Senate Bill 2 will help Georgia move in the right direction by empowering the Georgia Public Service Commission (PSC) to oversee pole attachment regulations.

In many states, legislators have successfully reduced high pole attachment fees associated with using any space on these utility poles that were erected for electric and communications networks.  In Georgia, unfortunately, the average pole rates are currently more than three times the amount that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says is reasonable.  The state should take this opportunity to align pole attachment fees with the FCC’s recommendations.

CCAGW has worked to fight governmental overreach and promote an economy in which business can flourish.  SB 2 is a step forward in that direction.

Sincerely,

Thomas A. Schatz
