Congress Drives the "Megabus" Off the Tracks

Even with the national debt at more than $22 trillion and trillion-dollar annual deficits beginning in fiscal year (FY) 2022, Congress continues full-speed ahead towards another fiscal disaster.  This week’s poor spending decision comes from H.R. 2740, an appropriations “megabus.”

CBO Increases Projected Deficit Estimate

On August 5, 2016, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released its “Monthly Budget Review for July 2016.”  The CBO increased its projection of fiscal year 2016 deficit by 10 percent, from $534 billion to $590 billion, in its review.  The non-partisan agency attributes the deficit increase to lower-than-expected revenues.  In addition to lower revenues, costs have also risen.

A Government That is Too Big

More and more news reports are surfacing about the overreach by the Obama Administration with regard to the partial government shutdown.  Remember, some 82% of government spending is exempt from the shutdown.  It is the White House that ultimately determines what is essential and stays open and what doesn’t in the federal government.

Debate and Compromise Is Not a One-Way Street
