Cosponsor S. 1888
Letters to Officials
July 31, 2015
U.S. Senate
Washington, D.C. 20510
Dear Senator,
Sens. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and Mike Enzi (R-Wyo.) have reintroduced S. 1888, the Unified Savings and Accountability (USA) Act, which would save at least $193 billion over 10 years. On behalf of the more than one million members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), I urge you to cosponsor this legislation.
For the past five years, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released an annual report to Congress regarding opportunities to reduce fragmentation, overlap, and duplication in the federal government. S. 1888 consolidates several of these recommendations into one piece of legislation, including:
- Promoting federal contract competition, which would save $80 billion;
- Cancelling the passports of citizens who owe more than $50,000 in taxes, which would save $10 billion;
- Requiring agencies to better manage their information technology investments, which would save $6 billion; and,
- Phasing out the $1 bill and replacing it with a $1 coin, which would save up to $13 billion.
At a time when the national debt has grown to more than $18.3 trillion, the nation simply cannot afford to overlook any savings that would help to increase the efficiency of the federal government. I urge you to cosponsor the USA Act. All votes on S. 1888 will be among those considered in CCAGW’s 2015 Congressional Ratings.
Sincerely,
Tom Schatz
President, CCAGW
