State Government Affairs Associate

This full-time position supports the operation of the state government affairs activities of Citizens Against Government Waste (CAGW) and its lobbying arm, the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW).  The associate will report to the vice president of policy and government affairs (VP) as a member of the policy and government affairs team.  The associate will be responsible for coordinating all CAGW and CCAGW work with state legislatures; tracking legislation; identifying and analyzing key government waste-related issues and trends; liaising with state-based think tanks and policy groups; and developing content and publications related to government waste at the state and local levels, including blog posts, op-eds, and issue briefs.  Occasional travel to states and conferences throughout the year may be required.  Two or more years of state legislative or similar experience preferred.  Excellent writing skills are essential.  Remote work outside of the Washington, D.C. area may be permitted.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Coordinate the development of CCAGW’s annual state legislative plan and associated work plan.

Track state legislatures and issues of interest to CAGW and CCAGW. 

Promote CCAGW’s legislative agenda through meetings with state legislators and staff.

Seek opportunities and respond to requests for CAGW/CCAGW to testify before state legislative committees.

Oversee state and local legislative research and facilitate all state and local legislative correspondence.

Provide state legislators and appropriate staff with information developed by CAGW and CCAGW.

Prepare remarks for state press conferences and state legislative hearings as directed.

Write blog posts and issue briefs as directed.

Write op-eds in local or national newspapers relating to state and local policy issues.

Provide backup support to the federal government affairs associate as needed.

Complete any and all other tasks as assigned by the VP or the president.
