Washington, D.C. – The Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW) today praised President-elect George W. Bush for nominating former Sen. John Ashcroft as Attorney General and sent letters of support to the Senate Judiciary Committee.

“Given he’s from the ‘Show-Me’ state, Sen. Ashcroft has already demonstrated his leadership on issues critical to taxpayers and consumers,” CCAGW President Thomas A. Schatz said.  “Based on his distinguished career as an attorney, twice-elected state attorney general, governor, and senator, we believe Sen. Ashcroft will bring integrity and common sense to a tarnished agency.  He has an excellent record of fighting waste and inefficiency.  He also believes that the marketplace should be driven by innovation, not excessive litigation and regulation.”

“With a soft economy and weakened NASDAQ, it is crucial Americans regain confidence in the Justice Department’s fair administration of the rule of law.  Many analysts contend that the Clinton Justice Department’s unwarranted forays into antitrust and merger activities helped precipitate the decline of technology stocks over the past year.  Unlike the current denizens of DOJ, Sen. Ashcroft would be unlikely to bring lawsuits that favor one competitor over another when there is no harm to consumers,” Schatz added.  “Based on his belief in individual freedoms and free markets, Americans’ personal safety and the safety of their investments will be well-guarded when be becomes Attorney General.”

Sen. Ashcroft has a strong record in the critical issues that will fall under his purview at the Justice Department, including:

  • A lifetime CCAGW rating of 85 percent, fourth highest in the Senate.
  • A 92 percent rating from the Information Technology Industry Council.
  • Support of a permanent moratorium on Internet taxation.
  • Strong defense of intellectual property rights.
  • An excellent record on cyber-security and privacy.
  • Being the first senator to have an official website; first to conduct an online poll.

CCAGW is the lobbying arm of Citizens Against Government Waste, a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization dedicated to eliminating waste, fraud, mismanagement and abuse in government.
