California - Support AB 2251 | Council For Citizens Against Government Waste

California - Support AB 2251

State Action

March 19, 2018

Dear Members of the California State Assembly,

On behalf of the 260,329 members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste in California, I urge you to support AB 2251.  This legislation would save taxpayers money by eliminating wasteful and duplicative government programs.

AB 2251 will require the State Auditor’s Office to perform an audit of every state department every 10 years.  With this expanded mandate, the California State Auditor would be able to root out waste, fraud, abuse, and mismanagement more effectively and more often.  The State Auditor’s office would also issue a report to the legislature and the governor identifying and recommending wasteful and duplicative programs for elimination.  Should the legislature agree to eliminate the recommended programs, funding for those programs would be returned directly to California taxpayers.

California’s budget has grown by $64 billion from 2011 to 2018.  The potential for state programs to duplicate themselves, as well as overlap federal programs, is considerable.  AB 2251 will not only help to eliminate wasteful spending in California, but could also serve as a model for fiscally responsible legislators in other states.

On behalf of California taxpayers, I ask you to support AB 2251.

Sincerely,

Thomas A. Schatz
