Vote 'YES' on two Coburn amendments to the CR

Letters to Officials

March 18, 2013

U.S. Senate
Washington, D.C.  20510
Dear Senator,
You will soon consider H.R. 933, the continuing appropriations bill.  On behalf of the more than one million members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), I urge you to support the following amendments being offered by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.):
Amendment #67, which would add new restrictions to conferences and travel. Language in the current Continuing Resolution (CR) prohibits funding for more than fifty (50) Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) employees from attending a conference outside of the United States, unless the Secretary reports to the appropriations committees in both chambers of the Congress that their attendance is important to the national interest (at least 5 days in advance of the conference).  This amendment extends the prohibition to all federal agencies (not just the VA) and all conferences (both within and outside the United States), and it lowers the number of employees to 25.
Amendment #69, which would prohibit certain homeland security grants to be spent on conferences, excessive pay, and other unnecessary items.  This amendment would prohibit the $500 million allocated for the Urban Areas Security Initiative to be wasted on items that do not improve homeland security.  Specifically, it prohibits funds from being spent on:  overtime or backfill pay; for security measures at Major League Baseball spring training facilities; to pay for attendance at conferences; or to purchase computers, computer equipment, or televisions.
These amendments would eliminate or reduce funding from profligate government-funded programs that Americans do not need and taxpayers simply cannot afford.  All votes on H.R. 933 will be among those considered in CCAGW’s 2013 Congressional Ratings.
Tom Schatz
President, CCAGW
