Vote YES on S. 1094

June 13, 2017

U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C.  20515

Dear Representative,

Today, you will consider S. 1094, the Department of Veterans Affairs Accountability and Whistleblowers Protection Act of 2017.  The bill passed the Senate on June 6, 2017, by voice vote.  On behalf of the more than 1.2 million members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), I urge you to support this legislation.

For several years, Americans have seen news accounts of outrageous wait times for veterans to receive care at VA facilities and horrifying details of mismanagement, waste, fraud, and abuse.  Numerous investigative reports conducted by government watchdogs and the media have shown the continued scandalous treatment of our veterans.  Questions remain whether the VA is taking seriously the need for reform, since many of those responsible for the dreadful care have remained on the job.

While the vast majority of employees at the VA are undoubtedly competent and responsible, working daily to improve the lives of our veterans, it is necessary to provide the Secretary of Veterans Affairs with the authority to remove, suspend, or demote employees that are not.  This legislation will provide the tools the secretary needs to ensure all VA employees are held to high standards.

Our veterans deserve the best care our country can give them.  To do anything less would be unconscionable.  All votes on S. 1094 will be among those considered in CCAGW’s 2017 Congressional Ratings.

President, CCAGW
