CCAGW Urges Support for S.1332

Letters to Officials

June 3, 2019

US Senate
Washington, D.C.  20002

Dear Senator,

Today you will vote on S.1332, Sen. Rand Paul’s (R-Ky) Pennies Plan balanced budget.  On behalf of the more than one million members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), I want to encourage you to vote in favor of this bill.

With the nation’s $22 trillion debt climbing higher every day, Congress must perform its constitutional duty and work toward a balanced budget.  Over ten years ago, Admiral Mike Mullen, then Chairman of the Joints Chiefs of Staff, stated: “The most significant threat to our national security is our debt.”  Our only hope of decreasing the debt is to decrease expenditures.

Under Sen. Paul’s plan, the federal government would cut two pennies from every on-budget dollar the federal government spent in fiscal year 2019 each year for the next five years.  This is only a two-percent cut per year; yet, it gives the government complete flexibility to decide where to make cuts.

S.1332 presents a viable path to balancing the federal budget in only five years.  If we hope to salvage our national security, not to mention Social Security and Medicare, we must reform entitlement programs, and the Pennies Plan would reform entitlement spending while giving Congress the freedom to decide what that reform looks like.  This budget simply sets a goal of balance and then asks Congress to make the tough choices needed to achieve that objective.  This bill would also make the budget spending totals enforceable over ten years instead of only one.

S.1332 will address our fiscal crisis while preserving Congress’ constitutional autonomy to decide where and how.  Again, I ask you to support this legislation.
