CCAGW Urges House of Representatives to Support H.R. 1640 and H.R. 1615
Letters to Officials
June 6, 2023
U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515
Dear Representative,
You will soon be considering H.R. 1640, the Save our Gas Stoves Act of 2023, and H.R. 1615, the Gas Stove Protection and Freedom Act. On behalf of the more than one million members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), I urge you to support these two bills.
Natural gas provides reliable and affordable cooking options for approximately 187 million Americans, and proposals to ban their use would have a significant adverse impact for those who would want to purchase replacement or new gas stoves, especially for low and middle-income individuals and families. It would also take away the freedom consumers now have to determine which type of cooking appliance best suits their needs.
H.R. 1640 would prohibit the secretary of Energy from finalizing, implementing, or enforcing the Department of Energy’s proposed rule, “Energy Conservation Program: Energy Conservation Standards for Consumer Conventional Cooking Products.”
H.R. 1615 would prohibit the Consumer Product Safety Commission from using federal funds to issue regulations on new gas stoves or promulgate consumer product standards that would substantially increase the price of gas stoves sold in the U.S. This bill is a commonsense approach to protect Americans from federal overreach and higher prices for essential household appliances.
The Biden administration’s proposed gas stove ban comes after a year of the highest energy prices in history. Ending the use of gas stoves and other natural gas products puts consumers at a greater risk for increased energy prices and diminished services. H.R. 1640 and H.R. 1615 would stop the administration’s regulatory overreach and protect consumers from facing even higher energy prices. For these reasons, I urge you to support these bills. All votes related to H.R. 1640 and H.R. 1615 may be among those considered for CCAGW’s 2023 Congressional Ratings.
Sincerely,
Tom Schatz
President, CCAGW
