CCAGW Opposes H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act

May 1, 2019

U.S. House of Representatives
Washington, D.C. 20515

Dear Representative,

On behalf of the more than one million members and supporters of the Council for Citizens Against Government Waste (CCAGW), I urge you to oppose H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act. If enacted, it would reverse the administration’s prudent decision to withdraw the U.S. from the United Nations’ Paris Climate Accord.

As President Trump said in a June 1, 2017 Rose Garden address: “The Paris Climate Accord is simply the latest example of Washington entering into an agreement that disadvantages the United States to the exclusive benefit of other countries, leaving American workers and taxpayers to absorb the cost in terms of lost jobs, lower wages, shuttered factories, and vastly diminished economic production.”

H.R. 9 would place the U.S. economy at a global disadvantage by giving the force of law to the Paris Accord’s strict emissions reduction targets. This country would be locked into energy-rationing schemes when other nations including competitors like China and India, have either set weak targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions or are failing to meet their targets altogether.

The stringent emissions targets set by H.R. 9 would have devastating economic consequences for every American through higher natural gas bills for home heating, increased electric rates, higher gasoline prices at the pump, and increased prices on almost all goods and services.

According to a 2017 report by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce’s Global Energy Institute, agreeing to the Paris Accord could cost the U.S. as much as $3 trillion in commercial losses by 2040 and 6.5 million lost jobs.

This bill would take the country in the wrong direction. Again, I urge you to oppose H.R. 9.

Sincerely,

Tom Schatz
President, CCAGW
