CCAGW Joins Coalition Opposing Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program

Letters to Officials

January 29, 2025

The Honorable Donald J. Trump
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Trump,

In a last-ditch effort to impose its failed healthcare policy on your Administration, the Biden Administration unveiled the next round of drugs selected for the so-called Medicare Drug Price Negotiation Program in the final days before leaving office. These so-called “negotiations,” authorized by the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) and which are not negotiations at all, are nothing more than bureaucracy-imposed price controls on critical medications. As the Coalition Against Socialized Medicine (CASM), we strongly urge you to immediately delay the implementation of this Biden-era program — before February 1, when harmful IRA triggers kick in — that will lead to continuous barriers to healthcare access in the short-term and, in the long-term, the dissolution of our free-market healthcare system. We urge you to freeze the Biden prescription drug price controls and chart a new path that diverges from our nation's current march toward socialized medicine.

Anyone who has taken an introductory economics class or studied history knows that price controls never work. They disincentivize development, lead to scarcity, and create overall losses for society. In the case of lifesaving medication, America’s patents cannot afford the reduction in the development of new medical advancements we are already beginning to see thanks to the IRA.

The tangible negative impacts of the IRA extend beyond decreases in medical innovation. Biden’s prescription drug price controls have caused premiums to increase and options to decrease for seniors in Medicare Part D. In 2024, average premiums for Part D plans increased by 21 percent, while the number of plans available has reached an all-time low since the program’s inception. Put plainly, this disastrous government overreach is chipping away at the positive aspects of America’s healthcare system while ushering in a time-tested failure of a policy that goes against everything our nation stands for. Biden’s imposition of the second phase of the Medicare Drug Price Negotiation program was nothing more than a last-minute move to try and block your efforts to implement sound healthcare policy. CASM urges you to closely examine the negative aspects of this program on American taxpayers, patents and the economy and announce an official delay of IRA implementation by February 1, before the next phase of the program begins. The future of America’s free healthcare market depends on it.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent mater.

Sincerely,
